"Some Good Points"
This is a neighborhood that varies a bit based on how far you get into it. When you are close to the 8 Mile portion it's not as great, but it seems to get better and better as you move inward. So it's a little bit unusual but even the worst area is still not bad. It's not that it's unsafe, it's just perhaps in need of a few updates.
This is great because it's close to a lot including some nice parks and recreational areas, and that means a lot to familes with kids who can enjoy it. All of these areas are safe and very popular in the warmer months. The area also happens to be close to some great neighboring communities and that makes it a great fit for families as well.
You will find that this area is not only easy enough to get to, but also that it has some great amenities within it. You can get to everything from stores to restaurants and you're even close to some decent nightlife. You really can't go wrong when you figure that the cost of homes here is really good for homeowners.
This is another area of the city that many should look to in terms of what could be. Sure there are areas within here that could use a bit of updating but it's all worth it when you get into the heart of it. This is an area that many would be happy with and for which the attractions and location could be a draw in and of itself.

"North Detroits busy 8 Mile area"
Regent Park represents a neighborhood on the true Northern border of the city. Just off of the major 8 Mile thoroughfare, the community can get noisy from traffic and population around the six lane road. With a major shopping center and a to major streets – Kelly and Gratiot – bordering it, it is not short on entertainment or dining, and the area is even catered to by a number of Public schools both inside and outside of the city limits.
The neighborhood is within walking distance of a recreation center, the Eastpointe City Center, and is not far from Warren, Harper Woods, Grosse Pointe and Eastpoint. With a Target and a Lowe’s, a major shopping mall (Eastland), and a number of apartment and condominium complexes very close by or within the neighborhood, Regent Park is one that continues to thrive.
The atmosphere is a bit bleaker right off of 8 mile, or just a block inward, but further South the community opens up into a number of relatively safe residential areas, and places filled with families and often many children. East of the areas known from Eminem’s “8 Mile” movie, it is one of the safest outside of the immediate downtown area, and is one of the busiest on the periphery of the city.

"Suprisingly nice eastside neighborhood the further you get from 8 mile"
My sister's best friend lives on Edmore in this neighborhood.
I didn't grow up on the east side, so all you ever heard was how bad it was. Now it's true that some places on the east side are terrible, this is actually a very nice, modest neighborhood. On most of the streets I have seen, you had very neat lawns and well maintained one and two story brick homes. There isn't a bunch of angry locals standing around staring at you, and it feels pretty neighborly for the most part.
Some of the houses as you get closer to Eight Mile are not as nice, but those are few and far between. I think there is one school in the neighborhood, but there are some others in the neighboring communities. The major streets of the area consist of Eight Mile, Gratiot Ave, Hayes, and Kelly. There are more than enough shops and restaurants on both Eight Mile and Gratiot, with plenty of bus stops for the local residents who need to get around. But it is Eight Mile, so noise and traffic are a major factor at certain times of the day.
One bonus of the area is that Eastland Shopping Mall is right next door. So basically every retail outlet you can imagine is in the mall, right at your fingertips.
