"Estes Park is stronger than ever..."

Estes Park is one of the most touristy places in Colorado due to Rocky Mountain National Park...however it is also a great town and I have several friends who live there and really love it.

Estes Park is great for nature lovers and those who want to take advantage of the world class hiking trails (but that by no means is only found here, that is throughout most of the mountainous part of the entire state!)

Thinking about buying real estate in Estes? The price of property is especially high though there are some areas that have "normal" neighborhoods and high but not extraordinarily high prices considering it is "Estes". The National Park really gives Estes Park a unique market and the tourism in summer is rediculous.

There are many pros and cons of Estes, but if you are a people person, a mountain person and want to buy property in an up and coming town that will only get stronger check out Estes. As of late 2013 the flood in the area really threw the town for a loop and destoyed a lot of property but the community has bounced back and seems to be back to normal for the most part, the community got stronger!
Pros
  • beautiful area
  • wildlife all around
  • Miles and miles of hiking trails
  • Rocky Mountain National Park access
Cons
  • a lot of tourists in some months
  • not a lot of quality restaurant choices

HeatherS
HeatherS The biggest impact for Estes was the destruction and closure of HW 36 and HW 7, the canyons really got nailed also Big Thompson canyon around Glen Haven area was seriously destroyed. In Estes the town I think it was okay. Heres a quote about Rocky Mountain National as of Dec 9th:
"Due to flooding in September, closures still remain in some areas on the east side of the park. The National Park Service is continuing to conduct damage assessments in the closed areas. Some of these areas will remain closed for the long-term, while others will reopen as quickly as possible."

"Great close in Mountain town - gateway to Rocky Mountain National Park"

Great town only 30 - 45 minutes from Boulder, Longmont and Loveland, with a mix of full time residents, seasonal residents and tourists. Fall and Spring are good times to visit with fewer peope in town, except during the elk rutting season on weekends. Summer is always a fun time to go, just be prepared for crowds. Main employment opportunities are tourist industry based, even so there is a vibrant community of full time residents . Some good restaurants - one of our favorites is Village Pizza, lots of shopping- mostly tourist and art based. The best thing about Estes is still Rocky Mountain National Park, the elk herds and the occasional big horn sheep. There are a lot of nice places to stay, from dude ranches to cabins to very nicely appointed condos, and of course numerous hotels and lots of camping areas. With access to hundreds of miles of hiking trails it offers the outdoor enthusiasts excellent opportunities year round for hiking, biking, snow shoeing and cross country skiing. I also enjoy fly fishing the Big Thompson River and many of the small streams and lakes in Rocky. Finally, it's the East gateway to Trail Ridge Road, the highest continuous road in the continental United States. With so much to see, do and enjoy, Estes Park is a must see.

"One of the best Colorado mountain towns around"

While on the surface Estes Park is a tourist place, there are roughly 6,000 people who call it home. It borders Rocky Mountain National Park and is one of the pretties places in Colorado. There is wildlife wandering around downtown and often cars will have to stop to let the elk cross the road. The main street in Estes is filled with little shops and eateries, but if you travel just a bit out of town there are some other great restaurants. Estes Park is known for the Stanley Hotel which the front was used for filming on the Stephen King movie 'The Shining.' Prices to stay here are a bit higher than the other hotels and bed and breakfasts in and around town.

Parking on main street can be hard to come by but there is enough parking lots to house all of the visitors located in and around the main shopping and dining areas. When walking downtown on the east side of the road there are places to stop and enjoy the river flowing by and it's a great backdrop in the summertime. There are also a couple of yummy sweet shops where you can get homemade salt water taffy and delicious homemade ice cream.

Just outside of the town to the south is the YMCA of the Rockies. This area is an affordable place for groups and families alike. During the summer months they host Camp Ouray, an outdoor camp for kids aged 7-17. It also has a conference center and huge dining area. There is a pool on-site and multiple trails to hike and explore. For the younger children there is a playground with little ground squirrels all around.

Many of the people living in Estes make their living by catering to tourists with the many shops and restaurants. Living in Estes Park seems as if it would be a great place for outdoor enthusiasts as well as mountain and nature lovers. The average home price is right under $300,00 with the median income of just over $50,000.

Outside of the tourist shops there is also traditional grocery stores but if you're looking for a new car dealership or Wal-mart you'll have to travel to Loveland or Longmont about an hour away. This is part of what many people like about Estes Park. It does have traditional stores but not overwhelmingly so.

The schools in Estes Park are average to above average and the high school scored a 9 on a 1-10 scale on state testing standards.

This town is one of my favorite Colorado places for both the charm and all of the outdoor activities near by. I love to go here with my family and visiting friends from out of town.
