"Wheat Ridge -- a big western suburb of Denver"
Wheat Ridge is a major Denver suburb of about 30,000 people. A western suburb just 5 miles from downtown Denver, Wheat Ridge is a neighbor of Golden further to the west, Arvada to the north and Lakewood to the south.
Until the mid-20th century Wheat Ridge was farmland primarily and was also the world's largest producer of carnation flowers. Now the area is where I-70 and I-76 join and subdivisions and shopping centers carpet the land like farmland did just over 50 years ago.
Wheat Ridge is an afforable place to buy a home near Denver. I found a really beautiful home with gardens and a big yard online for $425,000. There are many ranch style brick homes that go for about $150,000--$300,000. There are also some high end neighborhoods in Wheat Ridge whose gorgeous homes and properties have great views and go for one to two million. The downfall of Wheat Ridge is the interstates and many highways, traffic can be rough but there are good schools and good neighborhoods.
This is a great place to live if you work in Denver and there are city jobs, industrial and technology companies all around the area as well as government jobs.

"An area adjacent to the highway for easy access to the mountains"
Wheat Ridge is a nice neighborhood that has mostly single family homes with a few apartment complexes. There are about 30,000 residents and it has great access to the mountains due to I-70 running right through it. The homes prices start in the low $200,000 range although there are some areas where it is considerably less.
The schools in Wheat Ridge are all moderate on the academic scale according to state testing standards, with Wheat Ridge High School scoring the highest at a 7 out of 10 possible points. They are a part of the Jefferson County School District.
Some of the roads in Wheat Ridge are notorious for traffic, such as Kipling Street, 38th Avenue, and Sheridan Blvd. I-70 in this area gets pretty backed up during rush hour and also on Sunday and Holiday evenings with traffic coming down from the mountains. Depending on the day it can be backed up for a long time.
There are numerous places to shop in the area, but you need to go a little farther south to get to a mall since the Lakeside Mall closed some years ago. There are numerous restaurants and fast food places to dine at all along the major roads here. There are also numerous parks and lakes in the area. There are medical clinics here, but very close by is Lutheran Hospital and Saint Anthony's Central isn't very far away either. Both are excellent hospitals.
Wheat Ridge is a culturally diverse area with White, Hispanic, Asian, and American Indian in the mix with White being predominant and then Hispanic.
