"Nothing Great to Say"
With all of the activity that nearby Eastern Market gets you would think that there would be a draw to this area--but unfortunately there just isn't! The good thing to say is that this is close to some major roads and not far from local medical care, but that's about it. Sure you can get a lot for your money and have access to public transportation but that's about it.
This may have been a desirable part of town years ago but it isn't anymore. There are a lot of abandoned homes in the area and the crime rate is high here. There isn't much to offer in this part of town and therefore it doesn't attract many new residents. Even those that have lived here through the years have found that it doesn't offer much to them and therefore many are moving elsewhere.
It's unfortunate as this is what many people think of when they envision Detroit. This is definitely one of the worst areas of town and not even one that you'd want to visit. Hopefully it will get some attention in terms of revitalization but for now it's in a category all its own and is not a neighborhood even worth the visit.

"McDouglas Hunt – No Reason to Visit"
It is a shame that the fact that McDouglas Hunt borders a cemetery, is the positive note of this neighborhood. Although, one might think that the resting dead would invoke a sense of respect or calmness over the area, it’s quite the opposite. No one goes to McDouglas Hunt unless they have a really good reason.
The income here is well below the rest of the city and nearly 50 percent of the residents have not finished high school. Fortunately, public transportation is readily available because there are more people without cars than with them. Although, even if you have one, you likely don’t want it parked on the street in front of your house here. There is a plus side to the neighborhood though, if you do have a legitimate job and live here, the highway is right around the corner. There is also a nearby medical center, which you might need if you look at someone the wrong way here.
There is really no reason to live in this neighborhood. Even if you are struggling and need a place to live, there are other safer neighborhoods in Detroit. This is certainly not somewhere to raise a family or retire; just stay away.

"Not the friendliest looking area"
Ok, this is that neighborhood that is right next to Eastern Market, and is bordered on one side by Gratiot. When I used to go Bert's Marketplace at night, I used to travel down Gratiot a little bit to go to the gas station.
This place has a foreboding sense of doom, especially after dark. All sorts of shady looking characters and hooligans were wandering about, looking for trouble probably. I usually got my gas and left as soon as possible. I can admit I did not go deep into the residential part of the neighborhood, but I saw plenty off of Gratiot. I saw women walking around in places they shouldn't have been. They were probably "working" if you know what I mean.
You saw vacant lots everywhere, and closed storefronts. A couple retail outlets were scattered around, and of course fast food restaurants were close by. The bus did run down Gratiot, at unusually late hours in my opinion. I guess people have to get where they need to go at night as well. There is no way I would ever live in this neighborhood, regardless of the circumstances. But it is close to the freeway though, so you can jump on I-75 and make a quick getaway.
