"Small Neighborhood With Some Good Features"

This is admittedly a small neighborhood in the area but yet it's just full of people. This is what city living is all about to many as you find the area can get a bit noisy and full of traffic due to the large amount of people. This certainly isn't a deal breaker and as a matter of fact may be perfectly fine if you are interested in a true city feeling.

There are a fair amount of restaurants and shops here, particularly since it's close to some major roads. It isn't the best area of town but it certainly isn't the worst area either. There are pockets that need a bit of work and then pockets that seem to be in really good shape--pretty common for neighborhoods within Detroit these days!

The area is sort of average or in the middle. It could use some updates, but it's not a bad little area. You can get to what you need to get to and you feel safe for the most part. It's not a bad cost of living so that makes it worth it to people interested in moving to the city.

You are still a little ways off from the hot spots of the city, but it's certainly within the city limits as a whole. You can find something perfectly fine within this neighborhood and though it may need some updates, it's a pretty decent area overall.
Pros
  • Nice Houses to Be Found
  • Some Decent Amenities Nearby
  • True City Living Feel to It
  • Cheap property to be bought
  • Retail shops and busing down Plymouth
  • Some parts border the golf course as far as views
  • Surprisingly neat and tidy homes on some streets
Cons
  • Can Get Noisy
  • Very Crowded with A Lot of People in a Small Area
  • Potential for High Traffic Areas
  • Crowded
  • Too close to the freeway on some streets

"Avoid the foreclosures, and get a hot dog at Olympia Coney Island"

Right next to the River Rouge Golf Course, the Weatherby neighborhood in downtown Detroit is just south of the I-96 Jeffries Freeway, and lies off of Plymouth Road. It is a short walk from the Plymouth Square Shopping Center and the Fitzpatrick-Warwick Playground, and is among the many crowded urban neighborhoods in the area.

With over 2,000 people packed into 1/3 of a square mile, Weatherby is a mostly young neighborhood, with a population representing the mostly African-American cosmopolitan of the area. Household incomes are generally low due to the young demographic of the area, and because of the crowds Weatherby does tend to get noisy. It is home to one of the city’s many famous Coney Island restaurants, the Olympia Coney Island, and has other original dining options such as the Thai Bistro.

Weatherby features a number of houses worth as little as $20,000, and is among the many neighborhoods in the city hit especially hard by unemployment, the difficult economy and layoffs among city employees and automotive companies. Though foreclosures tend to run rampant, Weatherby remains a suburban area in urban Detroit. The neighborhood is also served by a number of the nearby Detroit Public Schools.
Pros
  • Olympia Coney Island
  • Cheap property to be bought
Cons
  • Crowded
  • Poor home value

"Small average neighborhood next to the River Rouge Golf Course"

This is a small neighborhood very close to the River Rouge Golf Course. I have driven through here a few times when I-96 had too many potholes, but mostly down on the Plymouth facing side. The neighborhood didn't feel too bad as far as the vibe I got. In some of worse neighborhoods, you immediately get a bad vibe, but not around here. That isn't to say that crime is nonexistent, only that I didn't witness any.

I was pleasantly surprised by how neat and tidy the homes and lawns near Plymouth looked, particularly by Heyden street. I don't know if there is a neighborhood association over here, but it has the feel of one. Some streets are better than others though.

For example if you are live on Burt Road you can see the golf course, and I have played golf over here. However, if you are up by Fitzpatrick on the other side, the I-96 freeway is basically in your backyard.

Plymouth has buses, and the retails shops for the locals of area. One more bonus is that there is a police station down by Plymouth as well. Not a super neighborhood, as I think there is only one school, but not bad overall.
Pros
  • Some parts border the golf course as far as views
  • Retail shops and busing down Plymouth
  • Surprisingly neat and tidy homes on some streets
Cons
  • Too close to the freeway on some streets
  • Pretty small with only one school
