"The winding alternative to the 405"
To me, Sepulveda will always be known as "the alternative to the 405 freeway." It pretty much runs alongside this major L.A. highway as a sort of Frontage Road but to the nth degree. Only some of the time is it quicker to take Sepulveda north-south instead of the freeway, but its just comforting knowing there's another option if you need. The boulevard itself can get pretty windy and nauseating at times when there's no traffic, but there's ample commerce and scenic views to make it worth your while if you're just going for a weekend drive to blow off some steam.

Sepulveda Blvd
"Welcome to Sepulveda"
Down by Westwood, Sepulveda Blvd isn't the cleanliest street in the city. However, it does offer tons of shopping. Some sections can get a bit distasteful, but the area in general is not known for being "poor". As for things to do other than shop, Westwood Recreation Center is about a one mile drive from Olympic and Sepulveda.

"Good neighborhood, reasonable rent and still close to everything"
West LA is a very convenient area, close to grocery stores, restaurants, and even ethnic food stores. No problem if you don't have a car, directly on the bus route. Bus will take you to UCLA with no problem as well as many other parts of LA without the hassle of driving yourself or parking. Within a mile you can find great Italian gelato, Argentinian empanadas, a Brazilian restaurant/club with live music and dancing on nights, and authentic Cuban food. The neighborhood is mixed with families and students alike but it's a relatively quiet place to live while still being close to everything you need.
