South Ave
"Another Hip Rochester Street"
South Ave is pretty hip and laidback. Lux is on this street, that bar is more like the type of bar you'd find in Portland or Brooklyn, then Rochester. Across from Lux is Godiva's vintage shop, I used to get clothes there all the time. There's a lot of hospitals and doctors services on the street. Relatively safe, though I'm not sure I'd recommend it for families, it's better suited for young people.

South Ave
"South Avenue is convenient for U of R"
I like South Avenue, I have lived close to it in the past and there are plenty of areas around South Avenue to get a beer, grab some lunch, or walk along the sidewalk. There is some crime, which is a deterrent for families. MacGregors bar is within walking distance and serves over 60 different types of drafted beer, its a definite stop on the way down South. South leads to Monroe that will take you downtown, and is a fast way to go from U of R to downtown Rochester.

"Not too bad"
I lived on the South Avenue closer to the InnerLoop. This was definitely not the best section on South Ave, although it was still remarkably quiet at times. Unfortunately, it was right across the street from an assisted living facility, and there were a few mentally handicapped people who routinely stood on the street yelling. Going further up South, the neighborhood gets much nicer. There's Jeremiah's Bar, which has awesome Cajun food and lots of fun. Highland Hospital is also right on South Ave. I guess it just depends where on South Ave you are.
