South Los Angeles
"Maybe no cigar yet, but really not as bad as it used to be..."
I won't go as far as saying that the neighborhood is now great. However, I wonder to what extent some of the South LA reviewers on Street Advisor actually live in those parts -- I don't. I have however spent quite a bit more time there lately and it's not even close to how bad it used to be back in the late 90's. I remember back then when you would drive through these parts and wonder whether you would make it out alive. Quite a different feeling now. Not the prettiest or the best, and I am sure there is plenty to get in trouble. But it just does not feel "unsafe" anymore. Also, because of the gorgeous architecture and nearby downtown which is slowly reviving, I think there is great potential near USC area. How long will it take? I don't know. But inexpensive parts of LA are getting few and far between and the area is ever so slowly gentrifying no doubt. I agree about the Fast Food joints galore however. What's up with that! Let's hope it changes...

"Yikes"
South Los Angeles is a renaming of South Central LA. It is nestled next to the 110 and it is a notoriously bad neighborhood. It has some of the oldest areas of LA and has some really beautiful old homes -- that, unfortunately, are now pretty delapidated. USC is in South Central and the campus is absolutely beautiful. But, everything around the campus is a total slum. A lot of my friends went to USC and it was pretty sad how often they came to hang out over in Westwood. Outside of the few campus bars, there's really nothing around the school. And, it's really dangerous in that area.
What South Central is most notable for is its gang violence. The bloods and the crips both originated in in South LA. South Central is featured in just about every gang movie (Boyz in the Hood, Friday, Menace II Society). The '92 LA riots started in South Central (not a surprise). It is essentially the neighborhood symbol of urban destruction.
One cool fact that sort of redeems the neighborhood: apparently, in the 90's, a group of ex gang members got together to form the first American Cricket team call Compton Cricket Club. I think that is pretty awesome. But, not awesome enough for me to want to visit the neighborhood.
There are a lot of famous people from South Central: The Williams' sisters, John Singleton, Baron Davis, etc.

Sorry, but USC isn't South Central. And even if it was...it's so gentrified at this point that you prob wouldn't know the diff. South Central is like, Slauson and Normandie - way far past the USC boundaries. The outskirts of USC ARE rough, but if you . stick within the college owned boundaries you'll be alright. Doesn't take a genius to . figure out what the hood is, but for the most part blocks that have houses on them are usually owned by hardworking families. The hoods with rows of apartments are sketchier, but in . general South L.A. is now the go to for most homebuyers in L.A. unless you are dumb rich. If that;'s the case, there are still pockets in the hills with ridiculous homes and views that you can't get . anywhere else. There's pretty much no area left in L.A. that hasn't been previewed or . considered. Even Compton and Watts are on folks radar. In order to win you need vision. At the end of the day buying in California is a tough feat to pull off. Good luck!
