"Iconic walk"
The Mall is the only straight line of walk through Central Park and it's pretty close to the middle of the park. It used to be where people where people would go to parade their new or best clothes. They would walk up and down this stretch. I'm not sure if that's why it's called the Mall but I expect that's just a coincidence. The real draw, today, is the aesthetic. There are these big elm trees lining the walk that form a sort of enclosure over the walk. It has become pretty iconic and I remember watching Vanilla Sky and thinking that I couldn't wait to see it.
The south side of the Mall is called Literary Walk and it's pretty cool as well. It's lined with statues of Shakespeare, Walter Scott etc. This is a really enjoyable spot in the park and it's much cooler than many other parts because of the elm enclosure. It's a must see for anyone visiting the park, in my opinion.
