"Is this really a major city?"
This is a perfect example of why I love San Francisco - urban sprawl and mountain oasis exist adjacently, seamlessly, and with one of the most mild climates on the planet. I've only ever passed through Treasure Island, but my drives have made me want to stick around and visit more.
The lovely, hilly road offers stunning vistas of the San Francisco Bay, and views of the cities on both sides. Drive for a few minutes off the highway and you really will feel like you are visiting a beachside state park - not entering one of the most famous cities in the world.
I'll be sure to write more when I have the opportunity to visit the area in its entirety.
