"A depressing relic of better times"
I lived in Troy, NY for five years while attending college. This city has a lot of history and some truly beautiful architecture - old buildings with stained glass and carvings, impressive churches, and some nice examples of public sculpture including a large statue of Uncle Sam. Unfortunately, Troy has fallen out of luck during the Great Depression, and its economy has not recovered. The town is filled with unemployed people, and crime (especially drug-related activity) is frequent. Caution should be used when walking around at night, especially in the southern section of the city. Many of the once-beautiful buildings are now abandoned and falling apart, and many downtown businesses are closed.
Despite these shortcomings, Troy does provide a very affordable place to live, especially for college students. The parts of town surrounding Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Russell Sage college are better lit and safer. Some stores downtown are thriving despite the overall gloomy atmosphere, including a few antique and jewelry shops. Restaurant, bar, and nightclub choices are quite limited at this time, and many students venture out to nearby Albany for these attractions. Overall, while I can recommend Troy as a cheap place to rent an apartment temporarily for students, families and professionals would be advised to stay away.

Morgan Ave
"Nice residential street, recommended for apartment rentals."
This is a very quiet area for renting an apartment. You can easily walk to the subway station, to shopping opportunities, and several parks. At the same time, there is not much traffic on the street and it is a peaceful place to live. The area is safe for walking and the neighbors are helpful and friendly. Recommended if you are looking for a quiet place to live in Brooklyn.

Kingsland Ave
"Quiet area for renting."
The bottom part of this street in the Greenpoint neighborhood mostly consists of warehouses. It has a utilitarian vibe to it and is not the best place to visit. However, the neighborhood is safe and quiet, and close to subway stations and retail shopping venues. I would recommend taking a stroll further up Kingsland Ave, where it becomes more of a quiet residential neighborhood, if searching for a place to live.

Manhattan Ave
"Good street for entertainment and dining out in a rapidly changing neighborhood."
Manhattan Ave runs through the Greenpoint/Williamsburg neighborhoods, which traditionally have been inhabited by many Easter European immigrants and artists, but are increasingly shifting to more yuppie inhabitants. This is driving up the rents, but makes for an interesting vibe for the street. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from here. The neighborhood is safe, but this is a busy street with quite a bit of traffic.

It is a safe and interesting place to visit. Parking is easy to find if you scout around the parking meters for a while. Subway transportation is within easy access. Java St
"Interesting stores and restaurants."
India St. is in the Greenpoint neighborhood, which has traditionally had a strong Polish and Ukrainian influence. These cultural influences make the street an interesting place to visit. Browse around foreign language bookstores, discount stores with good deals on a variety of products, and stores with imported gifts and accessories. Experience ethnic cuisine in a variety of quaint restaurants. The street was well-lit, closely-inhabited and proved safe for walking around at night. I definitely recommend it for a visit.

"Good for low-cost living"
I lived on this street for some time while staying with a relative. The street was quite noisy and had a lot of traffic and noise from the subway trains. The street seemed a little dirty and poorly-maintained. However, it is close to subway stations and basic retail stores. The rents here have a reputation for being affordable, so many working singles and students choose to live here. There is a problem with roaches in some of the buildings around. The neighbors did not seem friendly.

Nassau Ave
"Great street for shopping and strolling."
Nassau Ave is a relatively clean street with plenty of ethnic stores (Polish bakeries, foreign language bookstores, etc.) and restaurants. I lived nearby for some time and I enjoyed coming to Nassau Ave for my shopping. The local people seemed very friendly. Public transportation on Nassau Ave is excellent, with easy access to the subway stations. The neighborhood seemed very safe, with good street lighting.

Greenpoint Ave
"Fun shopping in a nice neighborhood!"
Greenpoint Ave is a busy street with a cool ethnic vibe. The street is located in a traditionally Eastern European neighborhood and has plenty of interesting Polish and Ukrainian shops and restaurants. People seem pretty friendly here. I actually got some random "hellos" while walking on the street, which is unusual in a big city. I felt safe walking around at night by myself here and enjoyed the overall vibe of the street.

"Quiet residential neighborhood street in Brooklyn"
I lived in an apartment on Sutton St. in Brooklyn for year, and I found it to be a peaceful, quiet, and friendly street to live on. The street is lined with brick and brownstone apartment buildings, some of them antique with stained glass window accents. There are plenty of trees along the street, helping to create a pleasant walking environment. The street is inhabited primarily by working couples and singles. Everyone is friendly and the street is very quiet for a city neighborhood. Subway station is a 10 minute walk away and connects to Queens and Manhattan. There are nice parks nearby and retail stores withing walking distance. I recommend Sutton St. to anyone looking for a peaceful place to live in Brooklyn.
