"There are great neighborhoods but crime is the biggest problem"
Memphis has so much potential but its public image has been marred by the uncontrolled crime in the city. Politicians are not exactly civic-minded so any opportunity to further self-interests are maximized. However, as of 2016, there is a new mayor (Jim Strickland) who is doing a lot of good things and bridging the communication gap with residents. There are gems of neighborhoods (particularly in Midtown) like Central Gardens, Annesdale, Cooper Young, Evergreen but more and more, crime is a factor in driving people away. All this to say, there are pockets of paradise in Memphis, but you have to look hard and/or know someone who is knowledgeable about the area. On the upside, there is lots to do and much of it for free or low cost...plus people here are very much socially-minded so philanthropy and volunteer opportunities are available.
