"Fairly safe if you avoid youths dressed in urban fashion"

Having lived here since birth, I can easily say that this is not such a nice neighborhood, I have been jumped twice during daylight hours, have been followed from the bus stop for 3 blocks, and have almost had my bike stolen by urbanized adults when I was merely 10 years old. If you enjoy walking or taking the bus safely, then this is not the best of neighborhoods. I would recommend having a car to live in this neighborhood to avoid waiting at busstops. My grandma was mugged of her purse by men driving by in an oldsmobile while she was waiting at a busstop in the middle of the day. Suffice to say, as long as you are careful around anyone who appears dangerous, then Visitation Valley is not such a bad place. In fact, many children live here, although most are born of new asian immigrants (filipino, chinese, vietnamese).

"Quiet in the north section, busier/dirtier in the southern end."

The first block on the north end of Hanh is incredibly quiet, with many trees and even an experienced automotive repairman. At the south end of this first block on visitacion is the newly renovated swimming pool, and across the corner is a very shady corner shop where people from the Sunnydale projects loiter around while waiting for the bus. Past that is more residential, but since it borders along the edge of the government housing, it is not a very safe area (there is one gated house that uses both a gate lock and an additional chain and padlock as additional security measures.)

"A mixed bag of school, residential, industrial, and shady"

The elementary school is located in the north part of the street, with the 9x, 15, and 9bx buses running along visitacion. There is a factory of some sort across from the old basketball courts. The corner store on MacDonald is a little shady and rundown, so I would not recommend living in that area of this street. However, past Geneva there is a somewhat nicer residential area that is quiet and peaceful.

"One and a Half Blocks of Houses"

Loehr St is 1.5 blocks. In this relatively small space only houses can be found. A few years back there was a corner store on the cross street with Visitacion Ave, but neighbor complaints of crime shut it down, and it is just a house now with a bus stop on the corner which serves the 9x, 9bx and 15 buses. The street is fairly quiet and peaceful, with the occasional harley motorcyclist revving and causing the alarms to go off along the street for fun (that is my guess, since this happens every so often during the week).

"Nothing Special Residential"

This street is like many of the uphill/downhill streets in the neighborhood. It is a residential street where nothing happens, and children can play in the street without much worry, although i still recommend supervision at all times in this neighborhood for younger children. Otherwise, Rey St is quiet, and peaceful. Note: the south end of Rey ends in a veritable maze of government housing.

"Industrial Type Road w/ Delicatessen."

There is a Caltrain station located here alongside the city's recycling center. Tunnel Avenue is frequently used by the residents of the visitacion valley neighborhood to get onto the Highway 101 southbound by turning onto Beatty Rd. Continuing on south on tunnel avenue will take you into the city of Brisbane. There is an old Schalge lock company set of buildings here set to be demolished sometime in 2009. At the north end is a famous-ish delicatessen called Piccolo Pete's which sells sandwiches and other goods.

"Residential Street with through-traffic"

This street is strictly residential, but because the senior center and middle school are at the north end, and geneva ave at the south end, there is a lot of traffic on this street at certain times of the day, ~7:30 and ~4 o clock. It can be noisy because of traffic, but aside from that it is an alright residential street with buses on Visitation and geneva, within walking distance from any part of Sawyer.

"Afterschool kids street"

There are two sections of the street, the part that runs alongside the middleschool side exit, and the section between Raymond Ave and Elliot st, the lower part is a very sharp incline very often used by school children. The upper part only connects campell, teddy, and arleta streets. The middle schoolers use this part of elliot often, as there is a small shop on Teddy and Delta which is used before and after school, without exception. Living on elliot, expect lots of noise on weekdays, as the school grounds are directly above the streets, and balls of all kinds fall down here.

"West: Park, West-Middle: Rundown Residential, East: Private school"

The middle section of the street is probably the most rundown part of it all. Over the years, the sunnydale area has gained a reputation for being torn by violence, gangs, and criminal activity. This place is not a joy to drive through, and definitely not to walk through, especially during afterschool hours, 1~5 when all the kids from the nearby middle school linger in streets and curse people out. The people in this section of the street are rude and violent. On the outside of the projects (yes sunnydale is a government housing), there is a section that runs through a small part between Crocker Amazon Park and John Mclaren Park. On the east end can be found the private church school for K-8 Our Lady of Visitacion school.

"Great for jogs, dog-walking, and general outdoor recreation"

This street loops through John Mclaren Park, and within close vicinity to the street are tennis courts, basketball courts, a dog pond, an outdoor auditorium, and many picnic areas for outdoor enjoyment. During all daylight hours can be found joggers, dog walkers, bikers, and families enjoying the small playgrounds and the general park area. It is closed after dusk and before dawn.

"Transportation, education, crime?"

Visitacion Avenue is one of the main streets in the neighborhood, being the main thoroughfare for muni cars 9X, 9BX and 15. The majority of the street is residential housing, with very little to do with shops and stores. The middle school parking lot is connected to the street along the northwest part of the street. Between Schwerin and Cora can be found the elementary school parking lot and the neighborhood baseball park and playground. The newly renovated swimming pool can also be found on the cross street with Hahn.

However, due to the close proximity to Sunnydale Projects, it is not the safest of streets. My grandma was waiting patiently at the bus stop a couple of years ago when her purse was snatched by several dark-colored men driving by in an oldsmobile. Needless to say, this neighborhood has a reputation for criminal activity, and its namesake street is no exception.
