"A Punk Show in Banana Republic Clothing"
6th Street in Santa Rosa is not quite like anything I have ever seen before. At a glance, this area is a quintessential suburban downtown, with bars, coffee shops, restaurants, and a fair dose of retail therapy. Take a closer look, or come back at night, and the scene becomes much more unique.
Like much of Western Sonoma County, the crowd is a combination of hipster, punk, and farm country. I came here for a masquerade party that featured a punk rock/metal-style band (quite good at what they do, I might add), and witnessed cross dressing, strip-fighting (a new term I coined that night), creepy masks, and an overall Halloween-party-esque theme. I think I might have enjoyed it more had I been on some kind of hallucinogenic drug.
Outside of the venue, the scene doesn't change much. Burners (Burning Man alums) abound, and I think I saw more lesbian couples than straight couples making out.
It's definitely a happening scene and a lot of fun, but be prepared...and probably don't bring Grandma at night.

That might be good advice not to bring Grandma. I think this because I am that Grandma - 68 and still in a rock band, still involved in true left wing politics, still a surfer. Grandma might have a thought that punk rock/metal music was always intended to supplant and even eliminate music that encourages diversity and joy, unlike almost any other musical genre you could name. Punk music is almost entirely white music, and encourages the roughest and toughest reactions of any music. I don't know that it typifies the essence of 6th St - where I'm considering a house right now, but if so it's pretty discouraging.
