Whittier
"Whittier Elementary School is the cornerstone of the neighborhood"
The neighborhood known as Whittier is within minutes walk of Boulder's downtown pedestrian mall known as Pearl Street. Whittier is the elementary school that is the cornerstone of the Whittier neighborhood. My daughter went to school there from Kindergarden to 5th grade, supposedly Whittier is the oldest continuously ran school house in Colorado. It is an International Baccalearate school but I digress.
The Whittier neighborhood is a little more reasonably priced that Mapleton Avenue or some of the super high end properties within blocks of downtown, but the prices are still astronomical even for a normal sized and normal looking house. The public bus system (RTD) runs constantly throughout the neighborhood and rotaries slow down the traffic on a couple of the main neighborhood streets. Car traffic as well as foot and bike traffic is pretty heavy being that the Whittier neighborhood streets are main "backways" into downtown.
But on a warm summer night or a crisp starry snowy night strolling though this neigborhood before or after going out downtown is lovely. It is a safe neighborhood and the school and school district of Boulder can't be beat in most peoples opinion.
There are not as many students or renters in the Whittier neigborhood compared to the outskirts of town near Gunbarrel or near The Hill by the university, but the university is only a few minutes bike ride away (due to traffic in Boulder it is often quicker to bike then drive).
