Willowbrook
"Great Jewish Community"
Willowbrook is a neighborhood in Staten Island that is located in the area commanly known as Mid-Island. Willowbrook is just south of Port Richmond, west Meiers Corners, north of New Springville, and east of Bulls Head.
Like most Island neighborhoods, Willowbrook was dramatically changed after the construction of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. Much of the area’s farm land was sold and residential development began. Jewish families flooded the area, and today provide much diversity to this community. Willowbrook is now the center of the Island’s Orthodox Jewish community. Young Israel of Staten Island (an Orthodox synagogue) is located in Willowbrook. The synagogue is the largest Jewish house of worship on Staten Island.
The elementary school is P.S. 54, and provided education for some Jewish children as well as Italian-Americans, East Asians, and South Asians who have moved into the area. Transportation in the area is abundant. Willowbrook is serviced by S62 and S92 buses to the Staten Island Ferry Terminal along Victory Boulevard. Buses to the Staten Island Mall, College of Staten Island, Bay Bridge Brooklyn, and many other stops are also provided.
