"Almost rented an apartment here"
So if you have a bike or car, this is a place for you. if you are only a walker, forget it. The bad first: there is only ONE bus, and it is a 10 minute walk from here, and it runs every 30 minutes. Blech! But if you have a car, there is parking and this place is quite nice.
I saw a HUGE home here, hidden amongst the trees. The corral with city police horses and a few local as well is right here. This is seriously like owning a home in the north woods, only you are still in San Francisco proper. Occasionally, you are even woken by the horns at the now refurbished but no longer used military base.
This place has such amazing history, being an active military compound during WWI and WWII. There are no ammenities here, so you really should have a car, but if you do this is the place to live. Also, renting is surprisingly cheap, though you need to get on a waiting list for quite some time, or be accepted into an existing household.
This is a great escape for people who love what cities have to offer, but hate the noise and chaos they tend to have as well.
