"The armpit of San Francisco"
This place is the pits or the armpit of San Francisco. Full of crack addicts and whores it's not a place you want to walk through during the day, let alone at night. It's usually heavily policed but they are mostly busy writing up traffic violations than keeping the homeless, crack whores off the street.
I drive across Eddy every day and people could give a crap less about walking right out in front of my car even if I have the green light. It's like they are so strung out on drugs that they could care less. But if I hit one, it will change the rest of my life. Ugh.
A friend the other day asked if they could walk down Eddy after a show and go to Union Square - I was like, uh, no - safer to grab a cab if you can.

"Don't Go East of Van Ness"
Given the proximity to downtown areas such as Union Square and the Civic Center, this is a surprisingly sketchy street. This review specifically pertains to the eastern section of the street. The neighborhood is filled with homeless people, panhandlers, and men who are more than happy to express their interest toward women. I was uncomfortable walking here in the daytime, so walking here at night in particular is not recommended. The streets are dirty, and there are more homeless shelters and free medical clinics than any other type of attraction.
The residents seem almost more in-your-face, more prevalent, than in other similar neighborhoods in other cities. As a result, this street can feel uncomfortable at any time of day. Restaurants, bars, and nightclubs are few and far between, but XXX stores can be found nearby in almost scary quantities. The only reason this street does not get lower marks is because of its proximity to other, better areas of the city.

"Nice Place, for the area."
The street is nice, quiet, and is full of humble people to talk to and have good memories. It is not a major street, and there is nothing very exciting on it, but if you are looking for a street to live on with a good atmosphere, this is the place. They are a family accessible are, and it is also a great place to start a career, because of the available transportation.

"Scary street to walk down at night"
I've been caught off guard and walked down this street at night, and almost got mugged about 30 times. This street is part of the tenderloin district in San Francisco that has many of the homeless living here on the streets. Walking here at night you will see a lot of people on drugs, doing drugs, fighting etc. It's not pretty at all.
Avoid at all costs.

"Place for volunteering opportunities."
This street is pretty long and the atmosphere of this place differs in different locations. There are areas on this street that may seem dangerous and impoverished. However, there are other areas of this same street that are peaceful and pleasant. I have visited the more impoverished areas to volunteer. There are many soup kitchens around in this region that are happy to have volunteers assist with their daily routines of serving those without homes and low income families. As for the housing, there are apartments and houses. There are many hotels nearby too. There are corner markets and small cafes around this street. The shopping district of San Francisco, is a few blocks from this street. On some parts on this street, there is a lot of greenery on the sidewalks, so it looks pretty nice. There are small shops scattered around the area so it is convenient for the residents. Overall, this street is okay because it has it's positives and negatives.

"Street to Avoid"
Eddy St. isn't the worst in the city, but it certainly isn't the best. What you'll find here: apartment buildings and liquor stores, mainly. There really isn't any charm to Eddy; in fact, west of Van Ness, Eddy is home to low-income housing and no shops to speak of. East of Van Ness, Eddy becomes part of what is known as the Tenderloin District - one of the lousiest areas in S.F.
