"A block of offices"
Exchange Alley is just a one block extension of Exchange Place. Exchange Place is actually named for the Merchant's Exchange though it does happen to circle the stock exchange buildings. Exchange Alley is a really narrow extension and used to be known as Tin Pot Alley and Oyster Pasty Alley. I wish I knew why because those are both awesomely bizarre names for a street. I also wish it were still called Oyster Pasty Alley. What a cool street name to live on if you could actually live here.
The south side of the alley is now an architectural building. But, it used to be an orchard owned by a Dutch guy. He started the last American Indian attack on New Amsterdam by killed a Native when she picked a peach from this spot. It was in the mid-17th century and 50 "New Yorkers" were killed. It's hard to imagine an Orchard being in such a now busy part of town, but, sadly, it's not to imagine a New Yorker killing someone over a peach.
Across the street is another office building but it used to be the most popular boarding house in New York. I don't even know if there are boarding houses in the city anymore. And, it's to think that they were ever en vogue, but, apparently, they were.
The Alley ends at Broadway which is also the site of the first American circus. This little alley had a lot going on once upon a time. But, now, it's just a couple of offices.
