Kensington Ave
"Not a great place to be"
This area of the city is not very good. It's kind of run down, a lot of noise from the elevated train. I would not be caught here after dark. During the day is a little shady also, be careful. This area was filmed in the movie Rocky, where he lived. That should give you some idea.

"Bargains on Kensington Avenue"
Visiting the city of Philadelphia may not include the seedy side of town, but if you ignore those places, you will miss out on bargain opportunities. About 1/4 mile from the intersection of Lehigh and Kensington, you will find the "Village Thrift Shop". There is no where in the city that you will find bargain second hand clothing like this. Jones NY suits for $8.00. Designer apparel for under ten dollars. You can dress like a million dollar babe, and spend les than fifty dollars.

Kensington Ave
"If you like being assaulted, this is the place to be"
Kensington Avenue was a thriving area many years ago; now it is just a place that has pawn shops, drug dens, etc. Stay off the 3100 block especially, unless you enjoy getting robbed, beaten, etc. If you are a doper, you'll be able to buy anything you want on Kensington Ave. Of course, you can go one block over to Jasper Street, and you'll be able to do the same. Ugh, nothing but a cesspool.
Kensington Ave
"Kensington Avenue (Under the El)"
Kensington ave is a pretty unique street in Philadelphia in my opinion. Kensington is a dangerous town. However underneath the "el" on Kensington ave you'll find all kinds of people who sell just about everything. There are many different shops and vendors on the street who sell knock off items and other things for dirt cheap. I wandered onto Kensington ave when I was about 13 or 14 years old, to check out some mural I had seen from the "el". I walked around for a little while and bought a 5 dollar hat. I took some snap shots of the graffiti mural, and watched the people. Once it started getting dark I realized it was time to leave, because I kept getting glares from people hanging around on street corners. Kensington ave is also where Cassidy, a rapper native to Philadelphia, shot his music video "Ima Hustla". All in all I think Kensington ave is a decent place to visit from time to time.I wouldn't plan a family outing there of course, but if you like to see the dirty side of town then it may be for you. Just make sure you respect your surroundings, and don't overstay your welcome.
