"Cute neighborhood"
Leavenworth does run from the Tenderloin through to Fisherman's Wharf, but so do a lot of streets. I wouldn't knock Leavenworth just because it stretches through an impoverished part of town. The part of Leavenworth that I find so charming is the area that stretches over Russian Hill/Nob Hill. It's leafy, hilly, and has a handful of places to grab a coffee or shop for groceries. And if you go a block over on Hyde Street there are a ton of restaurants.
Mostly residential it has your residential needs like laundromats and corner store grocery.

Leavenworth St
"Leavenworth: Impoverished in some parts"
This street passes through one of the most improvised regions in San Francisco, which is the Tenderloin District. There are some blocks on this street that are really grimy and dirty. A lot of homeless people live on the streets and roam around. Thankfully, there are multiple facilities to help the homeless, though not nearly enough to support all of them. That is why this street has so many organizations where people can volunteer. In the more unfortunate part of this street, the apartments are in bad shape. On the bright side, the region near Nob Hill has some beautiful houses and apartments. There are several places to dine scattered around this street. There are also multiple bus stops that lead to many other parts of San Francisco so transportation is not a problem, and as for greenery, there is more on some blocks than others.

Improvised? I think the word you are looking for is impoverished. Spell check gone array. It happens to me too.
Only 5 block of Leavenworth are in a really bad area. Once you cross Geary, there is only one bad building at the corner of Post.
