Oakland Ave
"A student's place"
I lived in the Oakland area while I attended Carnegie Mellon, and this was clearly a students area. This street has a lot of places where students can rent full houses or individual rooms. The street has all the facilities in walk distance, like mini markets, drug store and so on. The environment is very pleasant, with a safety feeling, even during the nigh.

"A Student Neighborhood"
I lived on Oakland Ave. for 2 1/2 years as a student, and it is undergrad central. South Oakland has a bad reputation, but I think its bark is worse than its bite. Oakland Ave. is loud and prone to the occasional vandalism type of crime, but I felt safe walking there at most hours of the night (as a female). Apartments range from nice to slumlord, depending on who you rent from. The parking situation is terrible; you may circle around a few times before you find a spot near your apartment. I recommend it for students only, because it's very near the University of Pittsburgh campus and lots of bus lines.
