"Private, secluded and very elite"
Riverview Terrace is a very exclusive street in an already exclusive neighborhood making it highly coveted and very expensive. It's one of the very few private streets in New York City and there are only six homes on this street. The street is protected by a locked gate which opens to a garden that the six houses all share. There are private decks for sitting and enjoying the East River View and little private walks at the river. This neighborhood is pretty ridiculous.
It used to be a really gritty area but then townhouses were built in the 19th century. The neighborhood became crappy again and all of the townhouses on the river were destroyed except for these six. Sutton Place started to become very popular with the rich and famous around the 30's and this street, naturally, became very coveted because of its privacy and the separation from the noise and people of Manhattan.
These houses are no joke. They're old, huge (for New York) and beautiful and they start around $15 million dollars. You're so secluded in this part of town, that you kind of forget you're in a city . . . and that comes at a price. The cons of living here are that this street isn't accessible to conveniences like the local cafe or grocery store and public transportation is pretty far away. But, I'm pretty sure that everyone lives here has a car so they're not too worried. Riverview Terrace really is the cream of the UES set. I don't think anyone would say no to living here.
