Westline Dr
"Busy Road but great beach vibe"
This is a busy road that connects 8th street and Shoreline. On one side you have a few homes, side streets and apartment buildings. On the other side you have Crown Point State Beach Park. This is a great beach and I have dreamed of living on this street for access to the beach. There are plenty of trees and it is peaceful with a great view of the water. The traffic is busier than the side streets but I would hardly mind as the view creates a peaceful feeling.

Shoreline Dr
"Peaceful and quiet, but tired and worn"
This street is another of those lining Shoreline that consists of some of the duller tract homes on the island. The landscaping is lacking and the homes are tired and worn. It seems safe and quiet though and I would consider living here just for proximity to the beach and Crown Point State Park. Its very flat and probably more affordable without having to go to the industrial side of the island.

Sheffield Rd
"Peaceful but a little dull"
If you are looking for something peaceful and a little more affordable than other places then you may like this street and this neighborhood, but you may also feel like you are living in Central CA. This is what suburbia looks and feels like. The homes are newer and the families mainly commute. There is not much in walking distance but there are good parks nearby and the landscaping is starting to mature.

"Middle of nowhere Alameda"
This wide road takes you from the main Alameda island to the airport and crosses Bay Farm Island. It is always interesting to find a road in the Bay Area that feels like it is the middle of nowhere, but this is it. You will see more planes than cars and will pass by open fields and a golf course. Certainly feels remote out on this road.
Blanding Ave
"Industrial street, don't try to set up residence here"
I visit this part of Alameda to go to the grocery store but it is a very industrial street and I wouldn't consider set up a home here. This is a short street with high traffic and although you may need to go here for necessities, I wouldn't recommend it for the long run.

"Tired and Worn Feel Betrays Name"
I drove down this street looking at homes thinking that anything named Sunset Road right next to the beach, had to have some redeeming qualities. However, other than being quiet and right next to the Bay, the homes are tired and worn and there is a real absence of landscaping. I think it is a safe street, which is important, but we didn't opt to live here.

"Best thing about this street is proximity to the water"
The homes on this street are pretty architecturally unexciting and the neighborhood feels a little bare and flat. There are not a lot of trees, something I consider important. However, it is quiet, feels quite safe and is within a stones throw of the Bay and Crown Point State Beach Park. I often park on this street when we go to the Alameda beach and have often thought that with a little mature landscaping it would be a great place to live.

Hawthorne St
"Great for families. Very peaceful."
This street is full of great homes and lots of trees. I think trees make such a big difference in how a street feels and this neighborhood does a great job with greenery. The street is a dead-end so there is not much thru-traffic and it is feels very safe. It is also very close to the water and the 8th street parks. There are limited shops within a block or so, but all the essentials are within a short drive or longer walk.

8th St
"High Traffic but really great street."
This street is really close to Webster, has very nice, original craftsman style homes and a couple great parks. There are lots of trees and is right up against the Crown Point State beach park. This is a high traffic street but it doesn't feel busy. There are tennis courts, a dog park and a great kids play structure all within one or two blocks.

Harbor Bay Pkwy
"Very Quiet Main Road Through Bay Farm Island"
Bay Farm Island is part of Alameda but it is a bit remote from central Alameda. Things here are a little more affordable and very quiet. It is great for those who want to commute to San Francisco via Ferry. This main road connects the little neighborhoods around the island and while it is a bigger road there is not much traffic and the view is peaceful all along the Bay. This road gives quick access to golf courses and the Oakland Airport.

"Funky street close to everything"
This is a funky little street that runs next to Lakeshore. It is accessible to everything and many of the houses and apartments have beautiful lake views. The pizza place on the corner is a great place that fosters a sense of community. Everything you need is in walking distance but we left because we didn't feel it was very safe. There have been a number of armed muggings over the last few years.

Trestle Glen Rd
"High end neighborhood great for families"
This is one beautiful neighborhood and I understand there is a great sense of community. It is very close to Lakeshore avenue shops and conveniences and feels very safe. The schools are good but the homes are large and the families a bit posh - but some people like that kind of thing.

"Very busy road with great variation"
The top of Park is very different from the bottom. The top of Park takes you to Montclair and goes through Glenview - these are very nice neighborhoods. They are safe and accessible to everything. Schools are good here and the neighborhoods are very active and fun. Below Glenview, however, things get a little off. Things are dirtier, more crowded and its full of a lot of apartment buildings. I wouldn't consider this lower part of Park a safe place to walk around in the evening.

Skyline Blvd
"Nice, Quiet Neighborhood up against regional park"
Beautiful homes on a beautiful street off of skyline blvd. At the end of the street, which is part of an unexpected neighborhood, you come right up to an entrance to the beautiful Chabot Regional Park. Beautiful and quiet! Far from any conveniences, but that is all of this part of Oakland. People feel very safe here and the weather is usually better than the other side of the bay.

"Quiet, friendly neighborhood in the hills"
Ok, so there is not much up here and you have to LOOVE the outdoors to love this place. Fortunately, we do. We have excellent access to all the hiking and biking trails one could dream of right across the way in Chabot Regional Park. However, there are no restaurants, no grocery stores, no good schools (although there is an elementary school that is in a beautiful location and I really wish I could send my kids there with a good conscience). If you need bars and even a little noise, this is not for you! However, if you enjoy the trees, some wildlife and beautiful bay views, this is the place!

"My favorite street in China Hill"
This is oddly my favorite street in China Hill. It has some quirky houses, lovely, but full and sometimes overgrown gardens and diverse residents. Some very scary Halloween houses and nice people. It links Newton and Brooklyn but has a completely different and funky feel from the other surrounding streets. It is safe with plenty of parking and has both single family homes and apartment buildings.

"Great neighborhood with lots of conveniences"
love this street that winds through China Hill in Oakland! Nice houses, very diverse, pretty gardens and a good sense of community. The local elementary school is small and one of the best in Oakland. We lived off this street for four years and loved walking to the lake and Farmers Market. Very accessible, if not still a little expensive in rent.

"Great Neighborhood with a great elementary school"
We love this neighborhood. It has such a nice vibe with a good sense of community. The elementary school is small and little-known but one of the best in Oakland. The houses are well taken care of and the gardens make it a joy to walk around. Parking is easy and it is a skip and a hop from Lake Merritt and shopping on Lakeshore. It is still an expensive neighborhood, but not compared to Rockridge or other ritzy areas of Oakland.
This is a diverse place with real people.

Golf Links Rd
"Very pretty drive that takes you to the hills"
Golf Links road is the "link" from Oakland into the hills. If you drive all the way up the hill you will feel lost and as if you have left Oakland altogether. Its a beautiful, hilly drive with deer and goats along the way. The Oakland Zoo sits at the bottom and Grass Valley neighborhood sits at the top, right next to Chabot Regional Park.

Lester Ave
"Dense little street with diverse population."
This is a dense street full of apartment buildings and single-family dwellings of every size and description. The street winds a bit between Newton and Hanover and parking is very very difficult, unless you live in one of the buildings that includes parking spaces. Our children attend the EXCELLENT preschool on the street (the Lake School) and we used to live around the corner. Now we drive them in to school and find parking very difficult. The neighborhood is safe and the street is very close to the Lake, which is a major plus. However, I wouldn't consider it safe enough to let my kids play out front on their own or take a walk after dark.

"Quiet, lots of nature and great access to outdoors"
We live on this street and are really enjoying this remote part of the Oakland Hills. It is so pretty up here and the isolation is a welcome reprieve from our busy days in Oakland proper. It feels incredibly safe and we live immediately across the street from the best hiking, bay views and mountain biking in the area. We can literally walk to Lake Chabot in 15 minutes. If we walk across the street and up a hill we are a 5minute walk from seeing the sunset over Mt. Tam. We have friendly deer in our yard all the time, which the kids really enjoy.
There are certainly drawbacks which mainly include isolation and limited sense of community. There are no shops or restaurants within walking distance and most are within 15minutes drive. There are many children in the neighborhood but we never see them and our kids have not found any playmates. Most people send their kids to private schools or work most of the day and the kids don't get outside.
We drive our kids into Oakland for school since the local school does not have a great reputation, which is a shame because it is quite diverse and located in such a serene environment. We also have to couple all these trips with our grocery shopping because there are NO shops around. I think many people shop in San Leandro, but our travels take us into Oakland proper so we skip the San Leandro scene, which I find a little depressing anyway.
