West 108th Street has an amazing contemporary African Art Gallery. I went there with a friend the last time I was in Manhattan. The gallery is exclusively African Art, so I would not recommend going if you expect otherwise. I thought it was a wonderful exhibit and really enjoyed it. I loved the diversity that I saw in the paintings. Viye Diba was the artist I enjoyed the most because I felt like I understood how his paintings expressed a message about social concerns. I would recommend this gallery to anyone who enjoys a nice relaxing day out in New York.
