"A truly mixed bag"
If Myrtle Ave has a lot of mixed reviews, it's because the street is a long one and goes through neighborhoods of varying safety and attractiveness. Where the street cuts through Fort Greene, there are a lot of shops and quaint little cafes and the street runs along Fort Greene Park. This area is a great one for tourists to visit; the street ends near the Heights and Downtown, neighborhoods that resemble Manhattan's Midtown.
However, if you're cruising north/west of Fort Greene into Bed Stuy and Bushwick on Myrtle you will notice a marked difference. If you aren't familiar with these areas then it's best to stay out of them. Though crime has gone down a lot in recent years, it's still not a place any tourist would want to end up - especially on foot.

"Great inner city living"
Cool place to live but if you are okay with the housing projects that take up lot of space but if you continue to venture through myrtle you will find cool treasures. Like the legendary Kam Kau chinese restaurant that has a children's book. There is also the cool Pratt art supply store is very big. Cool street nonetheless.

Myrtle Ave
"Stay away from area"
While visiting friends in Brooklyn my husband and I got lost and ended up on Myrtle Avenue. We were happy to find our way and leave! Myrtle Ave was a very rough area with many housing projects around. The area did not look safe and I wouldn't walk down that street alone. I would avoid many other streets around Myrtle Avenue.

""A residential/business area""
My experience with Myrtle Avenue comes from traveling on the B54 bus that runs ont the avenue everyday to school during my high school years. I have knowledge of every block and street all the way from Myrtle Avenue and Broadway, and Myrtle & Flatbush avenue.
There are many corner stores, local eateries, and small cafes on Myrtle avenue. This area is home to more small businesses than anything else. By my old school which was located on Clinton Avenue between Myrtle avenue and Park Avenue, there were a few notable places to eat that me and my friends frequented a lot. This included Johns Diner, which served the best breakfast, lunch and dinner. ( It was always crowded in the morning). There was also Farmer's Deli which served the best sandwiches, and Castro's whcih served Spanish food. The Conneticut Muffin on the corner served as a great subsitute for Starbucks.
Overall the street is wonderful or and serves has stores and small businesses convenient for those that may live or work in the area.

"A walk on Myrtle Avenue"
Myrtle avenue is definitely becoming a cooler street to walk down. It runs the length of Clinton Hill and is right by Pratt Institute, which is a great art school. This is definitely one of the busier thorough streets of the area, and so it has more stores, video rental chains, and supermarkets. I would take a walk down Myrtle avenue to get a real sense of the neighborhood.

Myrtle Ave
"'Murder Ave' looking up"
It'll probably never reach it's Navy Yard heyday, but there's no denying that Myrtle Avenue is finally on an upswing. In some parts, it's positively charming, though it doesn't quite match the vitality of its Queens counterpart. The area around the Pratt Institute in particular is a nice place to spend some time, with plenty of boutiques and cafes to pass the day. Still, when getting into less savory parts of the Avenue, exercise caution- it's still not totally up to form yet.
