East 30 St
"One good bar and nothing else"
30th in Kip's Bay starts off with the NYU Medical Center on 1st Avenue. This is slightly less creepy as having Bellevue down your street -- but, then again, Bellevue is only a few blocks down. Living by a hospital isn't terrible -- I live pretty close to the old St. Vincents that was still operating until a couple of years ago. But, it's not ideal either. It makes for kind of a depressing energy, I think. Unless, of course, you want to go trolling for doctors, in which case, this just may be your street.
Across 1st Avenue, there's a school for kids with disabilities, more NYU stuff, a horrific apartment building (it's concrete) and a really cool bar with pretty good food. It's a big medical center hangout, so like I said, if you want to troll for doctors (and happen to get hungry) this would be the spot to do it. It's one of the few bars in Kip's Bay that I actually like. It has a real neighborhood kind of vibe which is rare in this neighborhood.
The block between 2nd and 3rd is entirely taken up by massive apartment buildings. They're all sort of generic, big buildings, and I hate this neighborhood, but I imagine most of them have a pretty sweet view of the East River, and they probably cost a pretty penny. But, I wouldn't want to shell out that kind of rent to live in a neighborhood that has pretty much no energy to it.
The block between 3rd and Lexington is more of the same with a couple of cheap hotels and a Mexican joint in the mix . . . you get the idea. There's not much to do on 30th other than sleep and watch tv. And, it's dangerously close to midtown which is the porthole to hell in my opinion. So, if you work a lot, and don't mind portholes to hell, then this street may work. If not, I would say don't look on this street. There's a lot of traffic around here as well so . . .
