"Old hotel row"
The block between Broadway and 5th is mostly grand, old hotels. These hotels don't get any love anymore ... but, I think they should. The corner of Broadway and 31st is the former Grand Hotel. It used to be one of the most opulent hotels in the city (in 1870). It's not a hotel anymore but the exterior of the building is really gorgeous. The Herald Square Hotel is across the street and it's not an especially impressive hotel; but, it used to be a big magazine office with a lot of history. And, the building is quite old and maintains the old world feel. Maybe it's haunted! The Hotel Wolcott is a few doors down and it is from 1904. It was said to be the best hotel in the country at the turn of the last century and had many famous guests. The interior of the building is almost completely intact and I recommend everyone go and take a look.
The two blocks on 31st between Lex and 2nd have some incredibly beautiful townhouses. I am always amazed by how intact all of the beautiful, old homes seem to remain of the outskirts of downtown NY. These couple of blocks would make it ok to live in Kip's Bay. And, normally, I wouldn't live in this neighborhood if you paid me.
There's nothing to do in Kip's Bay aside from the movie theatre that is right at 31st and 1st. There aren't a lot of bars, there aren't any restaurants, and there isn't a real neighborhood feel. Plus, the proximity to midtown is just asking for tourists.

"Shop Quality Wholesale"
Shop Quality Wholesale is great! Imagine a store with great gently used items in great condition and you're there. I love vintage finds, and this spot is perfect for unique additions to any wardrobe. Otherwise this street is pretty drab as there are few venues where at one can cool one's heels and enjoy a drink after a long work week, and not much in terms of other shopping necessities.
East 84th street is close to the metro station and is accessible to many buses. Foot traffic is moderate, and it is a good neighborhood for families and young couples

"Murray Hill may kill me by way of boredom"
31st St is nice enough - we've got trees, no high rises, not too much traffic, lots of gyms and restaurants nearby, and a movie theater across the street. But Murray Hill as a neighborhood has so little personality that I question whether it's worth it to pay Manhattan rent to live here. Sure it's a little cheaper than some other 'hoods, but there's a reason.
Bottom line: if you live in NYC but would be just as happy still in college or out in the burbs, Murray Hill is for you. If you'd like a little more flavor, character, personality, whatever, check out the EVill or Harlem or Soho or anywhere else!
