"Depressing looking street"
East 45th starts off at the UN Headquarters on the East River, and many of the UN buildings continue on past 1st ave so this is a really UN heavy street all the way up to 2nd Avenue. i know that it's necessary but that really puts a damper on the neighborhood feel to an already depressing kind of street. It's all big buildings with no energy and no green. It feels like midtown but it's not and in a way, that's kind of worse. Anytime I walk around 45th I feel really appreciative of my neighborhood. It's not bad, but there's just nothing to it.
There are a couple of delis, takeout restaurants, etc, but it's mostly not exciting apartment buildings, commercial space, etc. The one cool restaurant that was on this street is no longer so you're hard pressed to find anyone milling around the neighborhood. There are a lot of people during the day because of the commercial buildings but usually it's just people walking to another place. I wouldn't recommend living around here. It's even hard to get to fun neighborhoods because the train isn't close or convenient. Pass.

"Great Party Scene/Sushi!"
E 45th is great in terms of entertainment and food! I remembering being on my way to a club with friends and us stopping right on the square, playing rock-paper-scissors to decide who got to pick the restaurant (so many different chocies) We ended up getting seafood (raw sushi, and what I now believe was some form of squid...) and a few bottles of excellent grape juice. I think that, because of the activity, I defiitely would recommend E 45th as a tourist attraction: but definitely at night! I guarantee you that the street is most fun at night. There are so many costume parties on any given night of the year, that you could quite possibly see something hilarious walking by. This street appeals primarily to the younger crowd in the evening, with so much going on.
I think that in terms of culture, E 45th brings it. If you want to experience a certain kind of culture that the Manhattan youth takes part in, this is one of the perfect streets to experience it!

"A Hub of activity!"
East 45th street may be one of the most active streets in New York City. Starting out on Broadway and stretching out all the way to the East River, one could spend an entire night on this street alone. The portion of it which resides in Times Square is always active, and provides very easy access to some of the best entertainment in the city. Furthermore, it is right next to almost all of the major subway lines. Stretching further east, 45th street reaches Grand Central station, which besides boasting some great access to points North of New York City, also has some great bars and restaurants. 45th and Park, is also known as Hemsley Parkway, and is home to Lea bar, a cozy, chic, and lively post-work place to relax and grab a few drinks.
Looking for some great sushi? Aburiya Kinnosuke at 213 E . 45th street between 2nd and 3rd ave offers some tasty and fairly well priced Japanese cuisine. The dishes are memorable and worth it. Among their best dishes include the salmon on houba leaf and cod with saikyo miso.
