"Avoid cutting through Bed-Stuy at night"
I'm not sure how this street managed to garner so many pleasant reviews; as a lengthy main drag that cuts through several Brooklyn neighborhoods, Nostrand is indeed a busy place and is home to inexpensive shops, diners and liquor stores. It cuts through Bed-Stuy and Crown Heights before extending just short of Brighton Beach. The area that goes through Bed-Stuy is not a place you want to be after dark - especially if you aren't familiar with the area. Though crime rates in Bed-Stuy have been on the decline, this neighborhood still has a ways to go.
When driving, I avoid Nostrand because the street features so many potholes in the Bed-Stuy area. As the street emerges from the neighborhood into Crown Heights there is a marked difference in the pavement, however - the street greatly improves.

Pros
- helpful road for transversing Brooklyn
Cons
- much of it cuts through not-so-safe 'hoods

Thanks. I agree I'm not eager to be there at night.

Nostrand Ave
"Bustling with Activity"
Nostrand Avenue is simply bustling with activity, with everything from food to shopping to any service oriented business you might need. I like this section of the city a lot. I think that this a great area for anyone to live in and think that though there are a lot of wonderful places in the city, this one is especially unique and worth checking out.

Nostrand Ave
"Live and happening"
The street is happening throughout the year. There are lot of things to do from, shopping to dancing away at clubs and parties. The street begins at Flushing avenue and its end point converges to Emmons avenue. You will not have to spend a lot of money on this street. Goods and grocery stuff are sold at cheap rates and affordable rates. Kennedy Fried Chicken is the place if you have a taste for chicken delicacies. 'Culpeppers' is also a hygienic food store.

Nostrand Ave
"Convenient to have around, but not to live on"
Nostrand Avenue is lined with stores on either side. There are supermarkets, clothes stores, furniture stores, as well as various take-out restaurants and a diner or two. While it is nice to have all these things close by, Nostrand Avenue itself isn't he most pleasant place to be at night. Since a number of projects run on one side of Nostrand it sometimes gives an earie feeling to walk down it at night. During the day, however, Nostrand is beaming with diversity and all different types of stores and hangouts.
Nostrand Ave
"Dirty but lively"
I grew up just a block away from Nostrand Ave, and loved the convenience of it as a kid and teen -- stores right nearby within a minute's walk. It's still like that, but now I realize that it is also one very dirty street. I don't know why there's such a litter problem there, but it's ugly. For me, the most fun part of Nostrand is near "the Junction" where it crosses Flatbush Ave. Here's where things get insane. The streets are lined with shops and the busniess spills out into the streets. Vendors are everywhere selling cheap goods of all kinds. There is usually music coming from stores and/or cars, and it is loud with crowds of people. It's hard to cross the street because of the incessant traffic, but it's worth heading over here for a taste of ethnic diversity and cheap shopping.
