"A cross-section of Brooklyn"

Stretching 10.2 miles long, Bedford Avenue - Brooklyn's longest street - is far more than just the hipster mecca many critics make it out to be. While it's true that Bedford Avenue's Williamsburg section may well be the world's hipster capital (although gentrification and rent rises may have pushed the truly "ironically poor" hipsters out to Bushwick and Red Hook), Bedford Avenue continues for miles past Williamsburg, passing through Greenpoint, Sheepshead Bay, Flatbush, and other neighborhoods before finally reaching Midwood. In doing so, Bedford Avenue plays home to a number of cultures and architectural styles, from detached homes in Midwood to staid, Upper-east-Side style brownstone townhouses in the Crown Heights region. Nearly all of New York's rich diversity is on offer here; a street full of Hasidim can give way to a few block of Russian or Polish restaurants - a few streets later and the area is African-American or Hipsanic. Such a variety of cultures gives this street a truly vibrant nightlife scene, as ethnic restaurants and "scene" bars dot the area. (It's worth saying, however, that the character of Bedford Avenue changes over the course of its ten miles, so check out the Streetadvisor Revies of its various cross-streets to get a narrower focus on your area). Fitness fans will be happy to know that the street south of Grand Street is equipped with a bicycle lane.
Pros
  • Lots of restaurants
  • Diversity
Cons
  • Too long to have a unified feel
  • Hipsters in Williamsburg are over
  • Rents have risen

"Hipster Central"

Bedford Avenue is the main thoroughfare in Williamsburg. It definitely has the most to do out of any of the streets in Willburg. There are an endless amounts of bars, coffeeshops and restaurants on this street as well as clothing and specialty shops.
Blackbird Parlour is a great place on Bedford. It's a cafe and a wine bar. It has that sedate sort of energy that a coffee shop has but they serve great wines too -- in case you want to have wine while you read. Lucky Dog is a bar that has twenty beers on tap and you can bring your dog in there which is pretty cool. Mugs Ale House is sort of a divey, college kids kind of bar but it's really dark and old. Soft Spot is a normal, run of the mill bar but they have cool stuff on weekdays like trivia. All of the bars get really overrun with young, hipster jerk crowd, but on the weekdays some of them are pretty cool.
Anna Maria Pizza is the best place around Bedford for pizza by the slice and it's actually on Bedford right off the L so it's really convenient. And, they're open really late so that comes in handy for this neighborhood's demographic. Bep is a great Vietnamese place and they're really reasonably priced. Dumont Burger has one of the best hamburgers in the city and it's really cute so it's definitely worth checking out. And, if you want pizza in a more civilized environment than the the kids' Anna Maria, then Fornino is a great place. It's nice and the pizza is pretty dang good.
Bedford isn't my favorite street in Williamsburg because there are just too many punk kids. But for things to do, this place can't really be beat. You can do just about anything and never leave Bedford for the entire day. I would just avoid it on weekends when the riffraff comes out to play.
Pros
  • Tons of bars
  • cute shops
Cons
  • Always crowded
  • Always noisy
  • Dirty

"Awesome place for everyone"

Bedford Ave has transformed in the past few years into one of the most interesting places in Brooklyn. It is a very crowded place, at all hours, yet filled with great venues such as restaurants, coffee shops, lounges, bars, and shops. It is a great place to go shopping (a mini-mall is located right on Bedford Ave and North 5th) and there are varieties of restuarants ranging from Thai to Polish cuisines. Take your family out or go on a date to one of the lounges that offer good food and great music. The most lively street in that area of Brooklyn.

"Trendy and lively street"

Bedford Avenue is in Williamsburg, the ‘hipster’ neighborhood in Brooklyn. This street is one of my favorites in New York. You are far away from the noise and hectic life of Manhattan and yet you can find great restaurants, bar, and shops. There are so many places that I would not know which one to recommend.

My advice: Just get off the L train and walk Bedford for its entire length from N 13th Street to Broadway. When your feet start to hurt enter the first place you find and enjoy it!

There are some schools on this street but they aren't schools but they are okay. Not a street I would live on but its cool for families. So my rating of this street is "Eh".

"This is Where It's At"

I really like this street. It was filled with everything from Brooklyn College, to a myriad of restaurants, to shopping, to the convenient L train which keeps you less than 30 minutes away from Union Square at 14th Street in Manhattan, Bedford Avenue is the pulse for this neighborhood. I really like this area and think that it would be a wonderfully convenient place to live in the city if you're considering moving to and visiting this part of the city. Great Street!

"coolest place in Brooklyn"

As much as I’ve experienced, the street is rich for its cultural diversities. There is an intermix of different social and ethnic way of life. The fact that it being the longest street in Brooklyn can also be one of the reason for this diverse effect. The street carries foundations of some huge buildings and commercial establishments. Bedford also has some great food stuff at places like ‘New York Muffins Corner, Verb Café, etc. I also bought my self some cool clothes and a leather handbag from Williamsburg.

"A Green Corridor"

Bedford Avenue, particularly the part of it that runs into South Brooklyn, is a beautiful road which spawns into a green corridor in the spring with trees lining either side. It is peaceful, quite, and a great place to raise a family. I grew up coming to Bedford park on Bedford and Avenue Z when I was a child and have fond memories riding my bike down the bike lane on Bedford as I grew older. Follow Bedford into the beautiful neighborhood of Sheepshead Bay and see all the diverse kids playing together on the playground and running for Mr. Softee once they hear the music. I grew up just several blocks away on East 27th, but would spend most of my time on the playground in Bedford Park. Its the kind of area you feel safe in even at night and get to interact with your neighbors during the day.

"A secret biker treasure"

So, full disclosure, I lived in Queens. But occasionally I'd sneak across borough borders with my bike and head for Bedford Avenue. It's ten miles long, and the best part is, it has a designated bike lane on each side, so you can get a workout while taking in just about every style of architecture Brooklyn has to offer. While there's been a lot of gentrification here, there are still little cafes hiding here and there if you keep your eyes peeled.

"Colorful And vibrant Place."

My friend took me to this street called Bedford Street just to help me do away with my boredom. We went by her car which she parked much before the street vibe started. The street was so vibrant and colorful that I did not even mind walking on this longest street of Brooklyn. The air on this street was peppy and young. Young boys and girls were just hanging out here at coffee shops and restaurants. Some of them were also earning by setting up displays of their talent in form of paintings, music or funny acts. Clothing and accessories are expensive but quality wise they are simply best.

"Great grand home architecture"

The Bedford Ave that everyone knows now is the part that runs through Williamsburg, definitely a trendy, cool, and expensive place to be. But further south on Bedford, you'll find a whole different vibe. Here, you have huge old mansions from the early 1900s and earlier. It's true, most of them are in terrible disrepair, but things are picking up and some have been restored beautifully. This area has been mostly African-American for decades, and it's one spot that still hasn't been gentrified, perhaps because the only real public transit around is bus so it's not too convenient. There's not much in the way of business over here, but I do love the old homes -- there are few other areas with this particular kind of architecture to see.

"Crowded with the young and hip."

I once took my mom for a stroll down bedford avenue in williamsburg and I felt very conspicuous. I felt as though I was back in high school and I had brought my mom to school for a day. Everyone is so young (and usually white) that I felt like my mom stood out like a sore thumb. This place is frequented by young urban professionals who have created a little california style haven for themselves. Food is often overpriced. Everyone is overdressed.
