"The Chinatown Gate"

This street runs right through Chinatown, and meets Arch Street with the historic Chinatown Gate. It's a great piece of art and history to view, but the street its on doesn't inspire feelings of friendship or camaraderie, as the gate is meant to suggest. The street is pretty dirty, with a lot of litter on the streets, and the people seem less than thrilled to have visitors among them. The scenery is fun, and great for people watching. There are a lot of businesses on this street, and as the name of the monument suggests, is home to mostly people of Asian ethnicity. As a white caucasian, I felt very out of place and almost unwelcome at times. It's a great place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there. I'm sure others' opinions differ, but that's my take.

"Origin of the Grid"

South Front Street is quaint and brick lined. It's a great spot to view the Delaware River from, as it runs parallel to this street. The parking opportunities are ample, and the vibe is friendly enough. It's the origin of the numbered streets, and takes the place of a "first street". It's quiet enough, and there are plenty of businesses. I get a great feeling of isolation whenever I walk this street during the day. At night it can be pretty romantic, or pretty creepy, depending on which portion you view. Use common sense, and above all else, use safety measures. This goes for any street, but especially one this close to major highways and the river. You never know what you'll find, but that's part of this street's charm.

"Get in and Get Out!"

This is a nice place if you would like to view the river - the last street BEFORE the river that isn't a major highway. As such, it can be charming. South Front Street is more accessible, in the historic districts. This section of Front Street can become a little bit creepy at night. I wouldn't recommend it unless you absolutely have to travel there at night. It borders on the warehouse/club district, and has some pretty spooky abandoned houses in the residential areas. It's not very welcoming at all.

"Edgar Allen Poe, The Electric Factory, and More"

North 7th street is home to the Edgar Allen Poe National Historic Site, as well as the Electric Factory, the region's premier spot for rock outfits to come and show their stuff. It's a great area, alive with history, but is sadly rundown and no longer a viable place for anyone to live. I'd steer clear of the area if you don't have business here, but for day trips and excursions to these two sites, it's well worth the visit. From what I recall, it's a great place during the day, and not so great at night. It borders on the warehouse/club district, and it's not so friendly after the sun sets.

"Artsy and Busy!"

South 15th Street is a very busy place! It's close to Philadelphia's University of the Arts, and as such, is a very artsy place! There are tons of tiny shops and bigger venues on this street. It's a very wide open street, and very pleasant to walk through. It's accessible to Philadelphia's Penn Center/Suburban Station (trains and subways) and is very easy to get to on foot, by bus, and occasionally by car (although don't count on finding a parking space!)

"One of the few streets in Philly I hated."

Morris is one of the few streets in Philly that I was so uncomfortable being on. I felt as though I had to watch my back every step of the way, and it was not a welcoming atmosphere. I wanted to leave as soon as I got there, and only ever visited when I had family obligations (I had a neighbor who lived on the street).

Some of the best advice I've ever been given about Philadelphia is to look at the streets around the one you want to know about. If it's bad, it's always bad in clusters. This street is NO exception. It used to be a nice neighborhood, but has since turned sour. Boarded up buildings make it eerie, and the proximity to the Roosevelt Expressway make it an easy spot to get away with anything.

I don't recommend living on this street. It's busy, dirty, noisy, and creepy. Crime? Yeah, it's there.

"Not Residential and Not Welcoming (Unless You're Looking For A Bar/Club)"

Willow Street is not a residential area, as far as I can tell. It's in a warehouse district, and is sandwiched between major highways (Lincoln, the Vine St. Expressway), and is not really known for anything besides it's bars and clubs. It doesn't present a very nice atmosphere.

I've visited the area while walking to Shampoo Nightclub (Home of Nocturne, Philadelphia's longest running goth event) at around 7 or 8 at night. I've never gotten a very cozy feeling from the street or it's surrounding streets. A few times I've been terrified out of my mind because the buildings are so derelict and the people who roam them that AREN'T clubgoers seem to be very down on their luck, bordering on desperate.

The street is home, as I said, to Shampoo Nightclub, Whiskey Dix, The American Red Cross, and little else. Unless you have business here, I would avoid it at all costs.

"Close yet Far"

South 6th street is close enough to all the center city and old city action to be accessible, but far enough away that it's a quiet atmosphere. There's the usual hustle and bustle of city noise, but overall it's a pretty nice place. I've been here a number of times, both day and night, and at a variety of hours and I have never once felt out of place or unsafe.

It's a very quiet atmosphere, mostly with younger couples or older singles. I would not hesitate to say that there are more than a few characters living in the area, but that's true of almost any street in this city. It's got a very working class feel to it, with neighbors helping neighbors. There isn't as much neighborly activity as I've seen in some areas, but there's certainly enough. The houses are charming and not too small, and you're close to a variety of attractions (including South Street).

The transportation to this area includes the bus. You can walk several blocks (a mile, maybe?) to Market East train stations and the Gallery, which puts you in the heart of center city. You can also go a bit further south to reach the subways, and even farther north (a mile and a half, two miles) to reach the club district and artsy parts of Old City. It's a good location, and I would love to live here one day. I'd recommend it to singles and couples, MAYBE families with kids.

"Quaint and Cozy"

Crefeld Street is a street with a pretty cool history. There were whispers of haunted locales on this street, which I haven't ever seen myself (although there's an annual halloween tour of the area), and it's got some spectacular architecture!

It's also home to the Crefeld School (8836 Crefeld Street). The Crefeld School, a progressive college prep school and member of the Coalition of Essential Schools, serves grades 7-12. I may be a bit biased when I say they're awesome, but that's because I went there!

The street has a very cozy feeling, but it's an upscale cozy. I don't think I'm too far off when I say that this is a pretty affluent street, and it's got an upscale artsy-vibe to it. It's close to Germantown Ave, home of some fine shopping venues and restaurants. It's also a very quiet street, minus any events and classes that go on at the school. Traffic isn't usually too bad (until school starts or closes for the day) and there really is no noise or activity at night.

I would recommend this street to just about anybody.

"Tight-Knit Working Class Neighborhood"

Mifflin Street is a pretty quaint neighborhood during the day. Most of the residents are families with small children, or families with extended members living with them. This can make for an excellent environment to live in. There are quite a few local stores, meaning you don't have to travel very far to get beverages, food items, or other necessities. Transportation in the area is good, including the subway.

I would not, however, recommend this area at night. It's in a pretty high-crime location of South Philadelphia. This doesn't detract from the overall neighborhood, but rather is a reminder to use common safety sense and travel in groups after dark. I've only ever found myself in one sticky situation, and it was very uncomfortable.

I have not lived on this street, but used to hang out and sleep over at a friend's who lived here quite frequently. I spent the good part of most summers in the area, and it gave me a pretty good feel for how it is.

Overall, the people are pleasant, the neighborhood is mainly pleasant, and the location is accessible. Bonuses include that it's pretty close to the Italian Market, and both Pat's and Geno's cheesesteaks!
