"No reason to be here unless you have a court date"
West 34th in Hell's Kitchen starts at the Hudson which would be an idyllic setting for some great apartment living . . .but, it's not there. This block is dominated by the hideous At&t building on the south side and the housing projects on the north. The only redeeming thing about the block is that the Colbert Report is taped in the midst of all of this. And, I wouldn't count on seeing Stephen Colbert milling about on this block during his breaks.
The block at 10th used to be a big music industry block. The Hit Factory, now a condo building was the spot where Notorious BIG, TLC and Bruce Springsteen all recorded albums. I don't know what the units look like, but I can't imagine that they are pretty seeing as recording studios are usually really tiny. Sony Music is still across the street but the aesthetic of the block is dull and there's no energy.
There are some little restaurants across 9th avenue but nothing I would ever stop into . . .especially considering that the Midtown Court is directly across the street. Nothing more depressing than grabbing a lunch next to a court appointed attorney in a ill-fitting suit, no?
Once you cross 8th, you're in an entirely different neighborhood . . so that's it. I don't know who on earth would want to live on this part of 34th, and, weirdly, the rent isn't exactly cheap. I don't just say "pass" on this street: I say "run."
