"Port Authority"
40th in Hell's Kitchen is pretty taken over by transportation things rather than anything cool like bars, restaurants or theatres. The street at 12th has nothing but a Greyhound maintenance station, the block at 11th is completely overrun by Lincoln Tunnel and the block at 9th houses the Port Authority Bus Terminal on the north side. The Port Authority is one of the biggest bus terminals in the country. I'm not a big fan of the bus (man, they're slow) but I know a lot of people that use this station to take quick trips to Boston, Connecticut, etc. It's pretty cheap and definitely reliable. There's also a bowling alley in the Port Authority which I think is pretty funny.
Other than all these transport stations, there's not a lot more that the street has to offer. There are a couple of things around 8th and 9th like a fish market, a fantastic dive bar called Syria, a few porn shops and some takeout joints. So, if you like porn and booze, this may be your area. But, there isn't really a lively scene around here. And, all of the traffic is midtown related traffic so it's really hectic during the day and almost dead at night, especially past 9th Ave. I wouldn't live here because there's just nothing to do. And, with all of the ins and outs from the bus station and tunnel, I think there are too many transients lurking around.
