"Boring and ugly"
36th in Hell's Kitchen starts off from the west at the Javits Center. This eyesore of a building is a massive convention center where they hold huge trade shows for just about anything you didn't even know existed. There are a lot of interesting people hanging out around this center and you can pretty much guarantee that it will always be really crowded.
The block at 10th is a churchy sort of block with a cool looking converted stable in the midst of it. There's nothing really to do on this block, and the stable certainly isn't a reason to go here. But, if you find yourself on the block already, then it's worth a peek. In fact, the only thing worth checking out on this block is between 9th and 8th. There's a building on the corner that houses Abingdon Workshop, The Barrow Group and Workshop Theater Company all of which are great off-Broadway theatre companies. I prefer the off-Broadway theatre scene here to the Broadway one. Broadway has gotten way too commercial and cheesy and it's theatre companies like these that keep New York at the top of its game.
Other than the one thing to do on 36th, this street is a pass. It's ugly and really commercial. There's no bar or restaurant scene, no neighborhood vibe and it's the worst combination of crowded and loud during the day and wasteland at night. It's just one of the less enticing neighborhoods in the city and 36th is far from an exception to the reputation that Hell's Kitchen has.
