"Another Hell's Kitchen gem"
West 37th starts off at the thrilling and eye pleasing (opposite day) Javits Center at 11th on the Hudson. It's a really ugly IM Pei inspired building where they hold conventions and trade shows for all kinds of bizarre things. The one notable thing about the center, in my opinion, is that traffic is always pretty bad when one of the conventions is going on. So, I try to beware pretty much all the time because I don't exactly have their calendar.
The street at 12th used to have a beautiful glass factory when the area was a rural part of Newfoundland. Now, it's all apartment buildings and construction sites for more apartment buildings. There seem to be an awful lot of new buildings in this area and not an awful lot of things to do for all of these people. I can think of about 20 neighborhoods I would rather live in than Hell's Kitchen and the rent isn't exactly on the low end. I don't get it.
The block between 9th and 8th is equally unimpressive with a Gray's Papaya stand . .. and, that's about it. I'm not a hot dog fan so not even that gets my goat though I know a lot of people love it. There is a cool apartment building on this block that used to be a zipper factory but that's certainly not enough to get me onto 37th in any kind of permanent situation.
In case I didn't get my point across, this isn't a fun street to live on. There's no bar or restaurant scene, no neighborhood vibe, and it's way too close to Times Square which means tourists, trash and noise everywhere. It's just kind of ugly and sad over here. And, it's kind of sketchy at night over by 10th.
