"The dead zone"
There's a pretty decent little run of streets leading up to 48th in Hell's Kitchen, and, unfortunately, 48th does not follow suit. There's nothing on this street. And, I mean nothing. It's pretty depressing; and, it's the kind of street that I typically associate with this neighborhood.
48th on the Hudson is the site of Pier 88 where a French liner caught on fire and was capsized by the water used to put the fire out. There are a lot of Nazi theories about this ship (it sunk in 1942) but nothing has ever been proven. I think that may be the most eventful thing that has ever happened on this street in Hell's Kitchen, sadly.
There's nothing on the street except for unimpressive buildings and a sad, little playground leading all the way up to 9th Ave. And, then you get up to 9th and there's an apartment building that used to be a hotel and a public school. Exciting stuff, huh? Basically, this street can just be walked right past and you would never miss anything. There's nothing to do or see, no great history, no great architecture. . . nothing.
